A Colonial Experience

Attend a fun and interactive session whereby students are guided by a colonial woman in preparing a couple of 18th century recipes, using proper methods and cookware. Learn how the hearth and farm were utilized for survival. Become aware of how food was preserved and stored. Andover, MA was once the printing capital of the New World
second only to Cambridge. Learn what it takes to be a printer and their importance in a town such as Andover. During this workshop you will get a chance to become a printer's apprentice and learn how to work a table top printing press, as well as how to bind a book. Each participant will take home a book mark they printed!

The Bose In Harmony With Education Program, combines science, music, and math to explore concepts of sound. The session engages students in hands-on demonstrations and discussions of vibration, pressure waves and the ways in which our ears detect sounds. The program begins with a multi-media surround-sound show, with special effects, that shares many ways in which we use sound to communicate feelings and experiences - through music! This is a very rare opportunity for homeschooling students to see this exceptional presentation that teaches students of all ages - even adults! - all about sound. I have seen it myself once, and could not be more pleased to be able to bring it to you here at the Expo. I have dedicated an entire workshop room to this presentation for both days of the event so we can give you ELEVEN time options to fit it into your schedule! by most societies, bread is the culmination of many cultural

Join staff from The Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art as we explore the art element of visual texture. History of Money: Economic Adventure

In this presentation about the History of Money we go back to the ancient times of Turkey when for the first time, coins were counted in lieu of cattle. You will hear about Ancient China's use of paper money and the birth of the first banks during the Middle Ages in Venice. We will discuss the usage of Spanish coins in America and the shortage of European coins that lead to the Indian wampuns of early colonial times. And finally, the presenter will explain the previously used gold and silver standards, "greenbacks" and the difference in the fiat money used in today's economy.

Abraham Lincoln conducts an 1860's press conference covering his path from the Kentucky frontier to the presidency and including issues in conducting the civil war, Lincoln's Cabinet members and the family in the White House and their pets, followed by a question and answer session. Come and see, hear, and jam with Pythagoras of Samos, one of the great motivational speakers of Greece.Pythagoras is best known for his discovery of the right-triangle theorem that bears his name. But did you know that he was also an accomplished musician and scientist-the first to study the physics of musical sounds, how they are made, and their effects on the human mind and body? In this workshop, Pythagoras himself will appear in ancient Greek costume. He'll lead participants in making music that proves the intimate relationship between math and rhythm, melody, and harmony.

Participants will create their own energy harness as they build their own take-home waterwheel. There will be a short discussion of the nature of energy and different natural energy sources. Then we will discuss waterpower in particular. They will learn how the ability to harness the power of water changed how people lived. Each participant will be given a kit containing the components necessary to create a working wheel. Students will gain a working knowledge of waterpower production, the impact waterpower has had on history and the uses of sustainable energy production.

This class is based on the Orff approach, which integrates movement,speech, songs, games and rhythm instrument playing to teach the elements of music to children. The program gives children an early, positive and joyful introduction to music. They learn basic musical concepts such as rhythm, dynamics (loud and soft), pitch (high and low), tonality (major, minor and modal), tempo and form while participating in stimulating and creative activities. Such activities include singing, playing musical games, moving to music, playing rhythm instruments, exploring the rhythm of speech and dramatizing songs and stories.

The students build their own crystal radio sets, winding coils, making a mounting board and placing all components on it, and then wiring the set according to a schematic. Experience the daily life, work and celebration of the Francis family through a sampling of authentic hands-on activities available at the historic Captain James Francis House in Wethersfield, Connecticut. participants will explore the life of carpenter James Francis and his family, through woodworking, cooking and celebrating a Victorian Christmas!

"Spice-Up" Your Chess Game With Plunder Chess

Imagine what would happen in a game of chess, if your chessmen could acquire additional moving capabilities as they played. What if your queen could move as a queen or a knight and your pawn could move as a pawn or a bishop? How about escaping check by letting your king move as a rook; well... imagine no more. Come learn how to play Plunder Chess and take your chess game where no brain has gone! You'll be hooked!

Come and meet Sky the Tegu Lizard, Hankie the Tortoise, Fluffy the Python and their friends. Both kids and adults will experience an etreme encounter with reptiles, bugs and amphibians. A workshop for kids by kids.

Zoo School Presentation

After an exciting slide show presentation, a seasoned zoo educator will answer questions about Zoo School 2007-2008. Come hear about behind-the-scenes tours, and what's involved with a zookeeper's job. Zoo School encourages a better understanding of why zoos exist today by actively involving the students in discussions and hands-on activities that highlight the History of Captive Animals, and current day animal ethics.
